When should I replace my pool pump?
How easy is it to tell that your swimming pool pump either needs replacing or repairing? Getting your head around those common signs that a swimming pool pump repair is imminent will help you to curb damages to your pump that will render your swimming pool as unsafe to use. No one expects the average pool owner to become an expert, but it is vital to understanding how you pool, filter and pump work so that you can repair some of the more minor issues on your own terms, and this will give you a better understanding of when it is necessary to reach out to professionals with intricate knowledge of pool pump replacements or repairs. Most newer generations of pumps are already equipped with automatic controls and safety features. When taking the time to learn your manual, you might find yourself better equipped to deal with specific problems that your pool pump is going through, if or when they arise. We have identified some of the signs your pump isn’t working as it should be, common causes of pool pump issues, when it is necessary to repair and when a replacement pump is needed.

Common signs your pool pump needs replacing or repairing

You may encounter some of the following issues with your swimming pool pump:

  • Water leaks: When water leaks from your pool pump, this is a definite sign that you need to call an expert to examine further. Leaking water could have many causes, including damage to the mechanical seal or a faulty 0-ring. If there is water spraying out, your pool pump seal could be broken and which is causing pressurized water to escape.
  • Strange noises: If you are hearing strange noises then it is also time to call in the experts, especially if there are screeching or grinding noises. Common causes of strange noises include defective bearings, a dislodged pump and cavitation when a pump is not getting sufficient amounts of water.
  • Air leaks: If your pool pump is actively sucking in air then there may be a leak that a technician may need to repair. These are usually caused by breaks in the plumbing or a pinched or broken o-ring.
  • Electrical problems: These are a sure-fire sign that you need to have the pumped looked at. The cause could be tripping power, water entry, and condensation in the pump’s motor.
  • Old age: As your pool pump begins to age, it will need a little more care. Older pumps should be serviced more regularly to ensure they’re still running efficiently. Pumps that are more than a decade old may need a full replacement, particularly if they are constantly breaking down

Common causes of pool pump issues

Some of the more common root causes that may result in a damaged pool pump include:

  • Stuck or defective bearings: usually caused by corrosion, shock, or vibration. You may hear the motor emitting unusual sounds, which means you need to replace the front and back bearings. They may also need lubrication, which means that a replacement is not necessary as the bearings are just dehydrated.
    • Stock-up impeller: Clogging will be likely particularly if there is a lot of debris. It is important to also check that the impeller’s washer, nuts, and bolts are not loosened or worn out as they will need replacing.
    • Dehydrated pump: If the pump runs without water, the system can become damaged, and will need to be turned off before things worsen.
    • Short circuit: Short-circuiting is extremely dangerous and is usually caused by the liquid inside the windings of the motor, usually when there has been flooding or heavy rainfall.
  • Overheated motor: when overworked or overloaded, motors can burn out which will instigate an entire replacement.

When to repair and when to replace

Now that you know some of the common signs and causes of problems for a typical swimming pool pump, here is a guide to when the pump needs repaired or replaced:

When a repair is necessary:

  • You are only experiencing issues with the bearing.
  • You have a stuck or clogged impeller – as opposed to one that is either deformed or broken.

When a replacement is necessary:

  • Your motor has passed the expected lifespan.
  • You want to upgrade your motor pump.
  • Your pump keeps breaking down, even after it has been repaired.
  • Your pump is not performing as is expected.
  • The cost of repairs will be more than the cost of a replacement pump.
