Causes of algae
There are a number of reasons why your pool may suddenly have become infested with algae, including warmer water temperature and sunlight which is why algae thrive in summer; the pH balance of your water being too high which makes it hard for the chlorine to kill the algae; chlorine levels being too low; lack of proper water circulation; and nitrates in the water.
Treating your green pool
To treat your
green pool, the first thing you need to do is remove any obvious debris and then clean out your filter – this means manually cleaning a cartridge filter or backwashing and rinsing a sand filter. Next, you need to ‘shock’ the water by super chlorinating your pool – let this circulate through the system for about an hour before adding an algaecide and, if the algae are particularly bad, a flocculating agent. Now you can get to work brushing every surface of the pool which has been affected by the algae. Run your filter for the next eight hours, cleaning or backwashing the filter as necessary. If you have added the flocculating agent then you will need to shut the system down to enable the floc to work before vacuuming to waste the now dead algae that have sunk to the bottom of the pool. Your pool should be looking great after a few days but it can take up to a week for your water to go back to normal and you need to make sure you maintain the chlorine level.

Although there are ways to treat your green pool, it’s also a good idea to take steps to prevent it. To stop algae ruining the look of your pool, monitor your pool water level, ensure the chlorine levels and pH balance are correct, keep your filter clean, make sure your water is circulating as it should, and brush down the walls and floor of the pool regularly. Taking the proper steps to maintain your pool can help prevent the dreaded green outbreak so it’s well worth the effort!
