pool cover
There are a lot of benefits to investing in a pool cover. Not only do they keep leaves and other debris out of the water which means less maintenance for you, but they can also prevent evaporation and can keep the water warmer. Two of the most popular pool cover options are solar covers and thermal blankets. So, which of these is right for you? Let’s take a closer look!

Solar Pool Covers

Solar, or bubble, pool covers remain one of the most popular options when it comes to pool covers. Solar covers are covered in air bubbles and are very light, so they are easy to take on and off. Like most pool covers, solar covers keep debris from getting into the pool, prevent algae from taking over and prevent water evaporation which can save a lot of money. One of the biggest advantages of solar covers is that they have the ability to trap the warmth of the sun so they can heat your pool up to eight degrees. This means that solar covers can extend your swimming season by raising the temperature of the pool. Solar covers are also simple to install – you simply cut them to size with scissors. However, they’re not as long-lasting as thermal blankets and, although cost-effective, do require more frequent replacement as they degrade over time. You can expect that you’d need to replace your solar cover after about three years.

Thermal Blankets

Thermal blankets are also a great choice if you’re in the market for a pool cover. They’re a high-quality pool cover made of multi-layered foam material and due to their construction, last longer than other covers as they won’t breakdown over time. Unlike solar covers which degrade in the sun, thermal blankets block UV rays. Not only does this mean they can take the Australian summer heat, but it also means that they’re great at preventing algae which flourish in the sun. Thermal blankets also prevent water evaporation by up to 98% and insulate the water. Thermal blankets generally need to be installed by a professional but can be cut to fit any pool. Compared to solar covers, thermal blankets cost more (although the last longer) and won’t heat up the water.
